今日はこの男のライブを観にハイドパークまで行ってきました。

ライブが始まる前に雨が降り始め、”グラストンベリーフェスティバル”になることも覚悟しましたが、無事に止んで、

Before the show it started raining, I was thinking that Hyde park turns into "Glastonbury"...

but It stopped quickly, thank God.

あの轟音ギターと共にお決まりの”Hey Hey, My My"でショウがスタート。最近の曲と往年のスタンダードをほどよく織り交ぜたライブ構成で、自分的にはもっと昔の曲（６９年〜７９年あたり）をプレイして欲しいと思ったその瞬間 "Down By The River" が炸裂!! カッコよすぎた、、、なんなんだこの衝撃は、、６３歳では到底ありえない大音量で弾くエモーショナルなギターソロと剥き出しのノイズに、自然と胸からこみあげてくるものが、、、たぶん２０分ぐらい延々とこの曲を演っていました。彼の音楽の魅力はライブに尽きると思う。それを言葉で語ること自体がナンセンス（感動をあたえてくれるほとんどの音楽がそうだと思うが）で、その場に行き感じるしかないのだ。彼クラスの、いわゆる大御所のライブを観てよくがっかりすることがある。彼らの失ったエッジの大きさにだ。もちろん彼らのピークをリアルタイムで観ていないわけで、それはそれで仕方がないし、そのイメージを今に求めるのもナンセンスなのだが、先週のオノヨーコ、そしてニールヤングのギグを観て感じるのは、彼らには少なくともアーティストとしてステージに立つ欲求そのものがあり、オーディエンスの前でパフォーマンスする情熱とピュアな理由があるということだ。特に今日観たニールヤングのショウは時間を超越した永遠に変わらない何かを感じました。たぶん人はその輝き続ける何かを、使い古したフレーズだけど ”ロックンロール”や”ソウル”、あるいは”パンク”とかいった言葉で表現するのだと思う。

The show started with "Hey Hey, My My" by his explosion guitar noise... It is so great!!! Although I had never been to his gig before, I knew how his sound was. But the volume of his guitar was enormous! It was much much louder than i expected. if you hear the sound you can't imagine that it is created by 63 year old man! I was so excited that He played some of the old tunes (around 70's') such as "Old man", "Heart of Gold"..., When I saw he was playing "Down by the river", was almost crying! he played the tune about 20 minutes...It was a beautiful guitar solo, i enjoyed it very much!

I think it was one of the best gigs I've ever seen. It's not kind of disappointing to see a veteran's gig at all... I found some similarities between Neil young and Yoko Ono's show, which i saw the other day. It is that they still have the desire to express themselves and there is passion and pure reason to do performance for the audience in their heart that would never rust...I think people say it "Rock'n Roll", "Soul" and "punk" or something... maybe.

アンコールでなぜかビートルズの曲 "A Day In The Life"を歌ってると、なんとポールマッカートニーが飛び入り！

曲の最後は二人でハチャメチャにノイズ合戦。気がつけばギターの弦が全部切れていました、、、

”ニール イズ ヤング フォーエヴァー”です。

At the end of the show, he played the Beatles song "A day in the life"... why???Paul Maccartney came out (picture above)!!!They sang the song together and ended up playing a messy guitar noise session, cut the guitar strings which was so fun...　"Neil is young forever"

先日、友達とDalstonのパブに飲みに行った帰り、近所のカフェの前を歩いていると、何やら聞き憶えのある声と楽しげなバンドの音が。店の中に入ってみると、オノヨーコさんとショーンレノン、コーネリアス、その他メンバー達がジャムセッションをしていました。残念ながらショウの終盤で１０分ぐらいしか観れませんでしたが、たぶんライブはほぼインプロ（即興演奏）だったと思う。小さいヴェニュー特有のバンドとオーディエンスの距離感、共鳴的なエナジーがそのままダイレクトに出た一体感のあるライブでした。過去に何回か彼女のパフォーマンスをここより全然大きいヴェニューで観たことがあるんだけど、その時には感じられなかったアーティスト"Yoko Ono”をこの場で体感できてとてもラッキーでした。（そういう意味では、自分の中で"Rock n Roll Circus"や当時の”Fluxus”的な空気にも遠からず触れられたような気が、、、）ここにいたすべての人が心からショウを楽しんでいたと思います。特にヨーコさんが一番エンジョイしてたなー。自然に音と響き合っていました。

I went out for a drink with my friend in Dalston the other day, on the way back home, I heard familiar voice and good noise from the cafe near where I live. got in the cafe, Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Cornelius and some members were having a Jam session gig in there! the show was almost finish so I could see it only last minute, It's a shame.. but It was really good gig. I felt that everyone seemed to enjoy the show, especially Yoko. She was enjoying her performance very much in such a small venue like a loft where you can feel the energy and resonance between the band and audience directly. Although I saw her performance couple of times before in the big venues, it was not as good as this time. personally, the atmosphere of the gig made me feel like "Rockn'Roll Circus" and "Fluxus" in the 60's... on that night I was so glad to see Yoko Ono as an "artist" not a singer. She sounded very naturally with the noise in the space each other...

プロデュースも手がけている日本の音楽ドキュメンタリー番組”Song to Soul"のロケの手伝いです。

I went to "Scarborough" to help filming a Japanese music documentary

program called "Song to Soul", which friend of mine is producing.

北へ進むにつれて天気も晴れてきて、景色も牧歌的に。イギリスの田舎は本当に美しい。

while going toward the north, the wether got better and the landscape is so lovely. I love the country in Britain.

スカーボロに到着。ひとまずカントリーサイドと町並みを撮影。

この辺一帯は中世の頃、英国中やヨーロッパの商人にとって重要な交易の場として栄えていたらしく、毎年夏にはたくさんの人が集まり、大規模な市（フェア）を催していたらしいのですが、今はその面影はなく、ひっそりとした佇まいの漁村って感じです。

the area used to be flourished as an important place for Britain and Europe tradesmen in the late middle ages. there was a big trade fair in the summer every year. you can't see its trace much in here though. It's like a small lovely seaside village.

そして、今日のインタビュー相手、マーティンカーシー宅を訪問。

and, we visited Martin Carthy's house to have his interview,

"Martin Carthy"（写真上）、英国の偉大なフォークシンガー／ギタリストの一人だ。イギリスの伝統音楽、民謡に根ざした彼のスタイルは、ボブディランやサイモン& ガーファンクル、フェアポートコンベンションらにも強く影響をあたえ、サイモン&ガーファンクルがカバーし、名曲として知られる英国の伝統バラッド、"Scarborough Fair"を彼らに伝授した人としても有名。今回の番組はその歌にまつわるエピソードを中心に、６０年代のフォークシーンなどを描写するらしく、僕的にも楽しみです。（７月中旬に放送予定）

"Martin Carthy" (picture above) is one of the great folk singers/guitarists in Britain, who inspired many folk singers such as Bob dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Fairport Convention in the 60's, It is also known that he is the one who taught Simon & garfunkel the song "Scarborough Fair", which is originally an old scottish ballad. this program is mainly going to feature the episode of the song and the description of the folk scene in the 60's. I think that his interview was so interesting, I can't wait to see the program.

インタビューの後、彼が歌ってくれた”スカーボロフェア”は、中世さながらの吟遊詩人の歌を想起させ、

自分がその曲の舞台にいたこともあり、一瞬その時代へとタイムスリップした感覚に、、、

after the interview, He sang his "Scarborough Fair" for us, It seemed much more a minstrel's song than Simon & Garfunkel's version and made me feel like a time trip to the middle ages... maybe because I was in the stage of the song...

歌詞のフレーズで、遠い昔から伝わるというおまじない "パセリ, セージ, ローズマリー アンドタイム〜♫"が、

あのノスタルジックなメロディーに包まれて、神聖な精霊の言葉のように聞こえてきて、、、

there is a line in the lyric "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme〜♫", this old charm is wrapped by nostalgic melody began to sound me like a word of sacred spirits of the dead or something...

、、、不思議な体験でした。

今、フェスティバルホールで展示されている”Paradise in Plasticine”というスカルプチャーです。

I saw an amazing sculpture called ”Paradise in Plasticine”at the Royal festival Hall the other day.

野菜も木も花もすべて粘土で作られています。ケーキおいしそう、、寿司までも！(ズームしてみて下さい！）

It's all made of plasticine. that cake looks delicious.., Sushi too! (if you zoom it, You can see them more!)

子供の頃を思い出しました。

天気が良かったので、ロンドンブリッジからサウスバンクまでぶらりと散歩しました。

It was good weather today, so I took a walk from London Bridge to South Bank.

ライブステージを発見、そして

found a live stage and

気持ちいい音を鳴らしてるバンドに遭遇。名前は"Poetic Pilgrimage"。彼女達（写真右）のパワフルなステージングに自然と引き込まれてしまいました。リリックとMCは社会、政治的メッセージ性が強く、個人的には８０年代のPublic Enemy的なフィーリングを彷彿し、その上に心地よいソウルとジャズ、レゲエ、ヒップホップが乗っかった感じです。声を大にして叫ぶ彼女達のストレートなカッコよさと、素朴で愛嬌のあるキャラクターのバランスが絶妙でとても印象的でした。今の時代にありそうで、実はそんなにいないタイプのバンドなのかな、、、

a really cool band called "Poetic Pilgrimage" in there. I was just overwhelmed with their energetic performance! the lyrics and Mc are politics, social, the message is very straight-forward. personally, i thought they are like Public Enemy in 80's meets cool Jazz Hip hop. You don't find this kind of band much that seems to be actually so much in an age today...

彼女達のショウを観た後、ロイアルフェスティバルホールに到着。ここでもライブが。モロッコ音楽、、Jajouka(右)？

after the show, I came to the Royal festival Hall, the live is here too.. morrocan music... Jajouka(right)? then,

館内では、毎年恒例の夏の音楽イベント、”MELT DOWN”がもう始まっていました。今回はフリージャズの先駆者でもあり巨匠の、あの”オーネットコールマン”がキュレイションを担当しているみたいです。ラインナップも多彩で、オノヨーコやロバートワイアット、パティスミス、マークリボー、レッチリのフリー、そしてルーツなど、とても興味深くて楽しみです。数年前に一緒にライブをしたことがある、Acoustic Ladyland（右）も参加していました。以前と変わらない彼らの"Jazz Punk"なライブに、たくさんのオーディエンスが魅了されていました。ここのドラマーのSebは本当にすばらしい。

This year's MELTDOWN was already starting inside of the hall. Jazz legend "Ornett coleman" curated the event this time. so the line up is very multiple and interesting, like Yoko Ono, Robert Wyatt , Patti Smith, Marc Ribot, The Roots etc.... Acoustic Ladyland (right) was also playing on the stage. I had a gig with them few years ago. the audiences seemed to be into their performance "Jazz Punk". I think that Seb is a really good drummer.

久しぶりに会う、フィルムディレクターのSimon Owens の展示会に行ってきました。

I went to Simon Owens's exhibition (I hadn't seen him for ages.. He's a cool film director).

中に入ってみると、手作りの小屋らしきものがあり、またその中に入ってみると、

彼の作風や世界が反映された、遊び心溢れるワークスペースで、中に居るといろいろ変なアイデアが湧いてきそうです。

ここでマッドな事考えながら、しかもマイペースに彼は仕事し続けるんだろうなー、、、

I really like this work space, it seems to be reflected with his style and world...

and I can imagine He will come up with a lot of crazy ideas for his art in this toy box.

Meeting at the Pub

今日はこのメンバー、トマトのサイモンテイラー(左)とハドソンーパウエルのルークとジョディ(右)、そして、イラストレーターの有稿(下)とソーホーにあるいつものパブでミーティング。今年の年末に、日本で彼らと他何人かの仲間達とあるエキシヴィジョンを企画しています。普段はみんなで集まって、それぞれの情報を交換したり、冗談を言いながらアイデアを出し合って、自由気ままに話を進めていくのですが、展示会のフォーカスもほぼさだまり、最近は特にチームとしてまとまってきた感もあるのか、今回はパブで初のパインド（ビール）無しのミーティングになりました。各メンバーの紹介も追々していきます。 "スクリブルアイランド"、、、楽しみです。

Today, I had a meeting with Simon (from Tomato. left), Luke & Jody (from Hudson-Powell. right) and Yuko(illustrator, below) in a pub in Soho. We and some another friends are planning a group exhibition in Japan as "Scribble Island" at the end of this year. I like the meeting with them very much, they are always talking about art, music, film... looking for new exciting things with some jokes and pints... I'd love to introduce them individually later on... It was a good meeting.

はじめに ／ Introduction

Miso-Soupというバンドを組んで、ロンドンで１０年間音楽活動を続けてきた。メンバーは全員日本人で、僕以外は楽器に触れたこともないまったくの素人。音楽への情熱だけを武器に、即興演奏を主体とした４人組のインストバンドだ。

バンドを始めて最初の２年間は、毎週土曜日にカムデンのスタジオにみんなで集まって、ひたすらジャムセッション。曲作りや練習などの妥協？は一切せず、お互いの楽器やおもちゃで無我夢中に感じるままノイズを鳴らし合い、音だけで”対話”しながら自分達の世界を無邪気にクラフトしてる感じだった。

初期のライブは椅子に座ってがむしゃらに即興で音を鳴らすだけ。当然曲らしきものなんか全く持っていなかったから、ずっとサウンドチェックしていると間違われ『いつ始めるの？』って客に聞かれることも多々、、、それはそれで面白いけど、たぶん経験不足と自分が外人という意識もどこかにあったと思う、終始無言でショウが終わっても緊張感からかサンキューすら言えなかった。こっちではよくアーティストがショウの合間にオーディエンスと自然に会話してコミュニケートし、自己主張をする。特にロンドンという多種多様な人種が生活する街ではあたりまえのことで、あの頃の自分達はその原始的な音楽性も相まってか、かなり得体のしれない日本人のバンドだったと思う。

即興音楽という、時には緊張感を持つ矛盾した自由な表現形態の中で、自分がありのままの自分になるということはけっして容易ではない。ましてや技術的な表現も持たなかったバンドにとってはなおさらのことだ。もちろん自分達のスタイルにずっと根拠の無い自信を持ってはいたけれど、当時はオーディエンスに全然理解されなかったり、ナイーブだとかいろいろ馬鹿にされたりもして、不器用ながら自分なりにずっと模索していたのを覚えている。

ただ、いつの日からかそんな体当たりのライブを重ねていくうちに、『お前らユニークで面白い』と言って興味をもつ人や、自分達の音楽性をやたらと深読みする人、感じるままにダンスして楽しんだりする人が自然と増えてきた。オーディエンスとの”対話”が独自に形成されてきたのだ。ライブの箱も廃墟のビルやローカルのパブといったアンダーグランドなステージから、フェスティバルや著名な音楽ヴェニューへと小規模ながら次第に大きくなっていった。そうしてアルバムもリリースし、日本でもライブをすることができた。

今ふりかえると、言葉の不自由な海外の生活もあったが、そういったオーディエンス達との言葉を必要としないコミュニケーションの感動が、１０年間という自分達のアートワークの大きな支えになったのだと思う。そしてライブという空間だけに存在する、人と人が分かち合う目にはみえない”瞬間”的なエネルギーを体感し、それを追い求めて、自分はこのロンドンという街でひたすら演奏をしてきた。

現在、Miso-soupは活動していないが、このバンドで得たかけがえのない経験は、さまざまな形のフィードバックを生んだ。自分と同じ”瞬間”を追い求める探求心に溢れた人々との出会いだ。　異なるフィールドで活動する彼らとの共鳴が『Scribble Island』 という新たなヴィジョンを創造し、自分自身をまだ見ぬ世界へと導こうとしている。人種や国境の垣根がないアートという自由な表現が生み出す感動を、言葉のいらないコミュニケーションを、世界中の文化のバリアが急速に減少し、同時に社会の均一化と単調化が進む今だからこそ、その必要性を強く感じる、、、

『スクリブル アイランド』とはそんな自分にとって、夢想的で子供じみてはいるが、新しい冒険に満ちた自由な”瞬間”を共有する空間であり、創造的な”対話”にあふれる未来への落書（スクリブル）なのだ。

I played in a band called Miso-Soup for 10 years in London. All members were Japanese and complete amateurs apart from me, who had never touched any instruments before starting the band. It was a group composed mainly of improvisation rendition, born out of a passion for music.

before playing a single gig we locked ourselves away for 2 years, playing instruments, toys and recording improvised noise in a studio in Camden. During those sessions, we never tried to practice or compose a track, but just tried to capture “the moment” in unexpected harmonious grooves which we played. It was sounded like feeling of our “dialogue” each other, innocent craft as kids do.

In early days of our shows, we just sat on chairs and played improvisation noise within our shapeless ensemble, from beginning to end we were completely no wards, silence therefore It sometimes seemed to look like a sound check to the audience, they often came and asked us seriously “when do you guys start?” … which was quite funny. Artists here often communicate with their audience in the show. It is especially natural thing in the cosmopolitan city like London, but at that time I was not even able to say the words “Thank you”…I think that I was a bit nervous about lack of my experience and there might have been a feeling somewhere in my mind that I was a “Gaijin” (which means foreigner in Japanese).

Improvisation music is a contradiction of freeform art with the tension at the same time. It is not easy to be yourself in the way of its expression. It’s especially much more for the band without a technical range. I think we were kind of mysterious Japanese band from the aspect of its primitive style too. Most of audience couldn’t understand and some people said you guys are naive or crazy something… Although we had confidence with our concept, I remember I gropingly tried to find my own way at that time.

As time went on, we kept playing many gigs… and the audience began to say our music was unique, interesting and started dancing. And the venue was gradually getting bigger, from underground space like ruined factories, to local pubs, to festivals and renowned venues. Then we released an album, and had some gigs in Japan. I think that sharing the “dialogue” with the audiences had become a product of 10 years of work. I was just pursuing “the moment” that exists only in such a space, and kept performing gigs in London.

Although Miso-Soup is not playing now, this band has given me a lot of experience and created feedbacks in various forms. This came about through meeting people in various fields who were also inquisitive and pursuing the same “Moment”. This resonance of the encounter created a new vision of “Scribble Island” and it is now leading me to the world where I’ve never seen.

In a time where the world is becoming evermore homogenized and flattened, and the number of cultural barriers across the world are decreasing, I strongly feel the necessity for outputs of communication not requiring the word, moving towards a free expression of art without race or border...

I know it sounds like a childish dream, but for me Scribble Island is a new journey where you can share “Moment” and it is a graffiti (scribble) for the future in a creative “Dialogue”.
